Schaefer,
Sabrina. "Chivalry Is Dead, Long Live Feminism." The Federalist.
N.p., 30 Oct. 2014. Web.31 Mar. 2015.
In the society in which we live, social media enables
people to post things that can be seen all around the world in seconds. This
causes a cross road, because not everything people share are positive or just. Many
things that are frowned upon by some are praised by others who think something that
is bad, is amusing to them. In this article Schaefer explains how hurtful some things
on the internet are towards women. In fact this article defends women and
argues that chivalry is dead.
Street Harassment towards women is very popular on social
media and it depicts women in a demeaning manner. From all the videos online women
are depicted a certain way based off of one video, even though there are many women
who do not act the same. From these disrespectful posts the author infers that chivalry
has been lost within a man’s way of life. Also acts of kindness should not be
expected by men, women should live as if a man will not do something nice for
them. But when someone does something nice it will be unexpected.
This is a very biased opinion that Schaefer portrays in
her article. But I’m sure that is how many women feel in this world where many
men have no sense of manners. On the other hand many many men are polite and
will hold a door open for a woman coming behind them. I will be able to use
this article to explain the other side of my argument which is that chivalry is
dead, I believe it is alive and well however.
Biles, Demis. "Chivalry Is Still Alive."
Spartan Daily. N.p., 13 Mar. 2013. Web. 31 Mar. 2015.
Biles explains that ever since he was a teen that the cliché,
“Chivalry is Dead” has been circulated a lot in his life. He however thinks
otherwise and believes it is alive and well. Chivalry, according to Biles, is
used all day everywhere people are and the majority of the time when someone
does something nice for another person that act often is not acknowledged. That
is a shame because if it is not acknowledged then there will be no
reciprocation of the act.
There are instances where chivalry is frowned upon by some
women for an odd reason. Biles says that there have been instances where a man
opens a door for a lady and then she scolds them off. So sometimes chivalry is
taken the wrong way even though some one is just trying to do something kind. Men
are faced with a double standard because women want to be treated as special,
deservedly so, but at the same time have to be sure not to compromise a woman’s
sense of independence.
This is a helpful article towards my paper since it
argues that chivalry is alive, which I believe. It has strong points about how
men attempt to act well-mannered towards men, but they sometimes get shut down.
Also chivalry is often ignored by some and forgotten about so the good deeds
are reciprocated onto others. This is sad, but the article will help defend my
thesis on how chivalry is still prevalent even though many do not appreciate
what others do for them, which is why some may say, “Chivalry is dead”.
